Horse Flats Bouldering

Teflon President Area

Named after Slick Willie (though I think Dubya has earned the title as well), this area is just outside the campground.  The trail is relatively faint to this less-travelled area, but there are some great problems here (see below).

There are two short use trails to this area, neither seeing much traffic.

  1. -The easiest (yellow on map below) starts along the campground road at (34.343475N, -118.11302W), just before the road bends to the left and approaches the toilet.  Head right from the road on a faint trail through open terrain, up and over a saddle, passing the 20’ Hill Top Block on your left.   Once at the saddle, head right and down to the huge Teflon President boulder, picking your way carefully around the yuccas.  (A friend of mine encountered a climber up here who was unfamiliar with yuccas and, assuming they were grass-like and not dagger-like, walked directly into one.)

  2. -Alternatively (light blue on map below), across the road from the campsite before the toilet, head right on a decent trail.  Just before you cross a small streambed, head to your right.  Go uphill, staying to the right of the gully.  The trail becomes visible as you gain height, and you’ll soon be in a position to drop down to your left to the Teflon President.

Most of the problems in this area are documented in Fry’s book

--Gymnasium (V2), Crossfire (V4), Exterminator (V5), Teflon Arete (V2R), Teflon President (V6), Launch Sequence (V4) and Mars or Bust (V5) come to mind. There’s potential for several very hard FAs--the arete left of Exterminator, and other lip traverses and faces on the Mars or Bust boulder, just below the Bonsai boulder.
