Earthrover Software map applications bring

Tom Harrison Maps to your iPhone.

Tom Harrison Maps--the best trail maps for California--are now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch.  Trails and backcountry roads for hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, and 4x4 touring are shown on the shaded-relief topo maps with 40, 80, or 200 foot contours.  Also included are campgrounds, towns and cities, highways, water features, peaks, and canyons.  All map data is included in each application, so you don’t need an internet connection when using the app.  Scrolling and zooming is fast and smooth, making navigation easy.  Several maps are currently available, with more coming soon:

Set display options for UTM coordinates or latitude/longitude, decimal degrees or degrees/minutes/seconds, metric or English units, and whether headings are reported relative to True North or Magnetic North.

Note: if using GPS on an iPhone 3G or 3GS in an area without cell coverage, you may need to increase the GPS location update timeout using the slider on this screen

Navigate the map using familiar iPhone touch gestures.  Drag the map to pan, and pinch or double-tap to zoom.  Use your iPhone’s GPS to find your location on the map, or set it manually if you’re using an iPod Touch.  Read off locations in the map in latitude/longitude or UTM coordinates, or measure distances and headings using the ruler tool.

Add your own markers to the map, and export them via email in CSV format. (This page has instructions for coverting the exported file into a KML file that you can view in Google Earth, complete with your notes and marker timestamps.)

If you have a compass and are using an iPod Touch without GPS, or if you simply enjoy being old school, you can take bearings to features and add bearing lines to the map to find your location.
